A chat with University of Sydney Yoga Society - Spaces around the world.

An amazing club doing amazing things. We sat down with the club to share their story as it could inspire other student orgs to do amazing things!

With hundreds of members, The University of Sydney Yoga Society is a club that provides students with an opportunity to practice yoga, meditation and relaxation on campus. The club is run by a group of passionate and friendly students who share a love for yoga and its benefits. The club organizes weekly sessions that cater to all levels of experience, from beginners to advanced yogis. The sessions are led by qualified instructors who guide the participants through various poses and breathing techniques. The club also hosts special events, such as workshops, retreats, and social gatherings, to enhance the student experience and foster a sense of community.

What's your favorite quote?

"Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results."

What inspired you to be a part of your club/org?

I have always loved practicing yoga and I wanted to help this new society grow! I was inspired by the opportunity to meet new people with a common interest.

Running a club/org is a skill. What’s some advice you have for someone else who is looking to run a club or be part of the exec committee?

You will make mistakes but it is all part of the learning process. As a relatively new club we have done a lot of learning along the way but this has ultimately created a stronger team with more diverse events for our members. Also, invest time in getting to know your team, attend social events together and have fun!

How has Spaces assisted with some pain points you had in the past?

Spaces has allowed us to fast track our booking process! Members have been more willing to use this platform as it allows them to create an account and they find it easy to use.

Would you recommend Spaces to other clubs?

Yes, I would highly recommend Spaces! It is extremely user friendly and we have found the setting up process seamless.

Having a dedicated SPACE for our club has allowed us to create an online yogi community. It has the insurance of any members being students of UoS and allows students who are tentative about joining our face-to-face sessions to see our forum and be part of the online community. This has been such an important tool transitioning from lockdown life.

For us executives, it's been far easier to create a community - the technicalities of creating a Facebook group/Messenger chat by verifying members is just too complex with the exponential growth of our membership. The insurance of anyone on SPACES being a university student allows them to join on their own accord by subscribing to our dedicated page.

We have a vision of merging all our avenues - Instagram, Facebook, email blasts - into one landing page on our SPACE. It's everything plus the added benefit of a community forum. It will also eventually help us with common inquiries that fill up our inbox and Instagram.

We are deeply committed to supporting student clubs and organizations. These groups play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging and community involvement, a student could be going through something, feel down or even alone. But student clubs + orgs makes people feel valued and accepted.
